Toppan was established in 1900 and is in the top Fortune 500 largest company list in the world with a turnover of $8bn, employing 35,000 world-wide.

Toppan has a diverse range of business fields including:

Toppan invests a significant amount on R&D expenditure. Toppan's Technical Research Institute pioneers developments in semi-conductors and card types, such as, biodegradable, recycled paper and PETG (environmentally friendly) cards. A good example of innovation is Toppan's anti-bacterial credit card in Japan. This card minimises the risk of passing germs and is proving to be extremely popular.

Toppan also has research institutes looking into virtual reality and multi-media. These are complimented by a world-wide network of 'Cyber Laboratories, including for example, Oxford and Tokyo Universities.

Toppan's smart card business activities started in 1981 and delivered their first smart card in 1982. Over the last twenty years they have delivered smart card solutions for:

  • electronic purse – e.g. Mondex accreditation in 1997

Toppan's Hologram Division delivers Grating Image, Holographic Stereogram, Perspective View, Lippman and the very latest Crystogram holograms.
