Toshiba
set up their smartcard division in 1981 and has been involved
in a number of smart card projects across a diverse range
of industries. For example in 1986 Toshiba built the super
smart card for the first ever Visa trials. The card
contained a chip, keyboard and LCD screen and was the size
of regular credit card.
Toshiba was also the prime contractor and system integrator for the
Smart Commerce Japan project and multi-application Javacards
for the Shibuya Visa trials. The SCJ project was the first
major implementation of SET and CHIP SET and used the Wallet
Server concept to secure credit card transactions over the
internet.

is also a Microsoft accredited partner for Windows for Smartcards.
